Stop trying to get blog traffic and focus on this instead

One question I get on a regular basis from new bloggers is “how to get blog traffic?” But while blog traffic is important (traffic converts to leads which converts to sales), learning how to get blog traffic is not the end all, be all of your blog’s success, especially in the beginning.

What to focus on instead of just trying to 'get blog traffic

In fact, when you are starting out, DON’T put the focus on gaining traffic.

Focus on building your authority. Focus on generating amazing content to demonstrate to your readers that you are a thought leader in your industry.

How to grow blog traffic? Offer amazing content.

What makes content amazing? Great question.

Amazing content…
… makes the reader think.
… makes the reader want to share.
… answers a question or solves a problem that the reader is facing.
… isn’t the exact same stuff they’ve read everywhere else.

Stop looking for more traffic and, instead, focus on better serving your existing readers. Find out what they want and give it to them. Over deliver.

I’m not saying “if you build it, they will come.”

While that has worked for some people, the majority of us DO have to work for our traffic. Pretty damn hard, in fact.

However, if you start out by under promising and over delivering, I promise you, when the time comes to take your blog to the next level, it will be MUCH easier (and faster) for you to grow your audience.

Do you want to go to the restaurant that only has a few good things, or the place that everyone raves about everything on the menu?

Your blog is the same way.

The more amazing things you have on your menu, not only are they more likely to come, but to keep coming back. They’re likely to tell their friends about it. They’re likely to subscribe. They’re likely to buy.

Ask your current readers what they want.  Survey them.  Email them.  Schedule phone calls with them.

Once you’ve done that, start HELPING them reach their goals and ask for nothing in return (except, perhaps, for more feedback on how you can even BETTER serve them).

How am I personally doing this?

This past week, I offered completely free blog reviews for people. Instead of just sending people a few comments, I’m actually screen casting myself going through their site, clicking around, and giving my feedback out loud. I am then sending them the link to the video, along with additional resources I think would help them. ALL I am asking for in return is feedback on whether or not they found the feedback valuable.

Ok, but now how do I get blog traffic

Assuming your content is amazing, you’ve got at least a few loyal readers, you are SERVING your current readers, then here are a few resources I recommend for how to get blog traffic.

  • 17 Strategies I used to Increase my Pageviews — Lena from What Mommy Does tested out many different traffic strategies and found some worked really well while others were a complete waste of time. She has since reached over 300,000 pageviews and is now sharing those strategies.
  • Building a Framework — This is one ebook I find myself suggesting to people time and time again. If you’ve never read it, I highly suggest grabbing a copy as Abby from Just a Girl and Her Blog breaks down all of the different popular social platforms and how she has used them to grow her following.
  • ConvertKit — In my opinion, ConvertKit is the best email service provider out there. People always think traffic needs to be new, but any sales person will tell you it’s easier to sell to an existing customer than it is a new one. The same is true for traffic. Capture people as they come to your site, and it’s much easier to send an email to get them back!
