A New Year is such a wonderful thing – full of fresh beginnings and new resolves…but, it can be frustrating, too! There’s so much to get done and we run out of energy before the day is over. Here are some ways to boost your energy that are not only going to increase your energy levels but are also healthy!
Drink more water
We hear this all the time – drink a gallon of water daily, drink 6 to 8 cups per day, drink half your weight in ounces every day! I get it, though. It’s easy to grab your morning coffee and go, forgetting about the H2O until you’re drinking more coffee or a soda at lunch.
Try getting a quart jar with one of those cool lid and straw toppers, and put some frozen berries or lemon slices in your water. This will add a little flavor, make your drink attractive, and you’ll WANT to drink it down.
I know, who has time to go to the gym? You can still exercise, though, if you’re sneaky. Get up 10 minutes earlier and do some deep yoga stretches. Set a timer for 25 minutes while working and make yourself get up to stretch and walk around for 5 minutes every time it goes off. You’ll be more awake, energized, and productive after 5 minutes.
If you’re running errands, try parking a little further from the store and enjoy the extra steps you are walking. Take a 10 to 15-minute walk after dinner to help your food digest better and your body to unwind from the day.
Sleep the Right Number of Hours
Yes, getting the proper amount of sleep is so helpful when it comes to boosting your energy. However, you don’t actually have to sleep 8 hours to wake up rested. In fact, science shows that sleeping in multiples of 90-minute blocks helps to ensure that you get through a full sleep cycle before you wake up. In that case, an ideal night’s sleep could be 6, 7.5, or 9 hours.
Some people even set an alarm 90 minutes before they want to get up, then set a final alarm for the exact time they want to wake. If you can fall right back to sleep after the initial alarm, this could help ensure that you get a full sleep cycle in. You don’t want to wake up in the middle of a cycle and have to drag yourself out of deep REM.
Otherwise, plan to go to bed at a time that will allow you to wake up naturally at one of these 90-minute marks. Your body will thank you, and so will your energy levels!
Diffuse or Apply Essential Oils
Essential oils are becoming more and more widely accepted as remedies for all kinds of issues. One of my favorite ways to use them is to boost energy. Add one or two drops of lemon, grapefruit, rosemary, or a variety of others to a small amount of carrier oil and apply to the back of the neck, temples, and wrists for a concentrated boost of energy.
Diffusing essential oils is another great way to tap into their incredible benefits. Try a blend of orange, rosemary, and frankincense to help improve cognitive function and increase your energy levels while working!
Green Juice Drinks
Greens are packed with so many nutrients that provide energy and health-boosting properties! The problem is, the average American diet doesn’t integrate very many greens. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, green juices are a great way to gain the superpowers of kale and spinach without eating like a rabbit. Try drinking some green juice mid-afternoon instead of heading to the nearest coffee shop and see what it does for your energy levels.
Take Your Vitamins
Vitamin C is incredibly important to every function of the human body, including the ability to process stress and produce hormones. Vitamin C also fights inflammation, so take extra if you are dealing with inflammatory issues.
Vitamin B12 helps your body produce energy, so make sure you’re taking a quality B12 supplement. Vitamin D is also important for increasing energy and focus and reducing stress.
Surround Yourself with Inspiration
Sometimes, the best way to increase your overall energy is to refocus your vision. Make sure your workspace is filled with things that inspire you and motivate you to keep moving forward. Creating a vision board is a great way to do this. Next time you’re having difficulty generating energy, look at your vision board and remind yourself how important it is to you to keep moving forward!
Meditation is another excellent way to clear your mind and refocus. Meditation calms down the body’s release of cortisol (the fight-or-flight stress hormone). Because we tend to be so busy all the time, our bodies get stuck in flight-or-flight mode and we are frequently dealing with high levels of cortisol. Even a short meditation session can move the body out of this stressful condition and produce a more stable, energetic state of calm and clarity.
Make time for those who are most important to you – including yourself. We need to stop letting busy-ness run our lives and spend time with the people we enjoy! You will find an incredible benefit from making connections with loved ones and may walk away with renewed energy.
What are your favorite healthy ways to boost energy? I’d love to hear about them!
