One of the top questions I see new bullet journalers ask is, “What the heck do I use washi tape for?!”
Before I dive in let me just say, you don’t have to use washi tape! Just like I said in my DIY Bullet Journal post, your bullet journal is YOUR journal. It can be the Pablo Picasso of journals or it can just be Plain Jane, as long as it works for you.

Now let’s get into how I use washi tape! Also, isn’t my washi tape dispenser/organizer beautiful!? (Thanks, Jen!!) The best part about it is that it comes with a bunch of great tapes and theres still room for ones that I already had. I also keep a pair of baby scissors in it to make clean cuts when I’m getting fancy.
I find myself using this one all the time, if you don’t feel like doing any fancy lettering you can lay down some tape, and just write over it to make your headers really pop. Check out Jen’s hack on how to prevent smudges on washi!
This one is pretty simple. Insert washi where ever you like! I usually do it when theres too much white space
3. Cover Up Mistakes
Last but not least, my absolute favorite way to use washi tape is to cover up mistakes! Whether you wrote the wrong month or day, made a spelling error, or you just don’t like the direction you were headed… cover it up! Check it out below, I wrote the wrong month on my March spread, add a little washi and you can’t even tell!
Some of our current favorite tapes include:
- These skinny ones — we both LOVE these in our journals, as they make great dividers, page flags, or thin page headers.
- These metallic ones — who doesn’t love beautiful silver and gold accents?
- These floral ones — how feminine and beautiful are these?
